With Lana Del Rey, nothing is as it seems. As was the case with her breakthrough YouTube video for “Video Games“, littered and spliced with vintage video clips, and then her subsequent official music video debut for her debut album’s title track, there’s an air of mystery that surrounds Del Rey’s visual output. So it should come as no surprise that now, when we are given the “official” music video for “Blue Jeans”, it’s, well, a bit odd and open to interpretation. .
So what’s the jist of the video, you ask? Well, for one thing, it is shot entirely in black and white, which, when you consider Del Rey’s penchant for that old-timey, vintage Hollywood-era vibe, such should almost be expected. Also, as in her video for “Born To Die”, we’re greeted by the return of the heavily-tattooed man who appears to be the sultry object of the singer’s lustful affection. Now, what happens plot-wise throughout the course of the video is up for debate, really. Del Rey acts all slithery and sexual, per usual, takes a dip in a swimming pool, where she’s joined by the aforementioned tattooed bro, and some sort of alligator-like creature joins them for some laps. There’s also a lot of gyrating and sex-like action: Fingers are placed in Del Rey’s mouth, etc. It’s all over in just over four minutes. But it seems like much longer. .
Now, after watching the video, some people in the blogosphere are wondering whether they just witnessed some sort of alligator sex act. We think not. But we do believe that Lana Del Rey doesn’t care what we think. She’s an artist (at least in her own eyes) and will tickle her creative fancy whatever way she sees fit. Will we always understand her motives, premise or creative plot line? Hell no. Bu that’s part of the beauty that underlines the woman’s art. .
